An Evening with author Edwidge Danticat

Born in Haiti, Edwidge Danticat was brought up by her uncle after her parents moved to New York; she joined them at 12 and learned English, the language in which she now writes. She published her first novel at 25 and continues to expose her country's traumatic history, becoming a potent voice for the diaspora, also using non-fiction and film. She was honored this year at the St. Louis Literary Awards.

African American Meals and Meanings

In a new book about African American foodways, author Rafia Zafar chronicles the influence of black cooks on the way we eat. Slaves and recently freed people were highly respected for their talents in the kitchen. Some notable cooks even published cookbooks as far back as the 1800s. The cookbooks reveal much about the lives of their authors and the relevance of their recipes to this day.

Healium is the world’s first virtual and augmented reality platform powered by brainwaves and heart rate via consumer wearables. In Columbia MO, a small tech startup called StoryUp is the brainchild behind the innovative product. Sarah Hill the CEO and Cheif storyteller at StoryUp got the idea after her involvement with veterans and witnessing the impact that virtual reality had on veterans’ experiences.
