ECPAT-USA's Legislative Advocacy team has been working with state and the federal governments to pass legislation that will change how child victims of trafficking, exploitation, and abuse who commit crimes are sentenced, known colloquially as Sara's Law.

This law was inspired by the story of survivor advocate Sara Kruzan. Sara was 11 when she was first exploited and subjected to years of endless sexual abuse and violence. Although she was only 16 at the time, she was tried as an adult and convicted to life in prison for killing her trafficker. Released early after a national campaign on her behalf, Sara now advocates for the rights of incarcerated women and children.

In honor of the publication of her new memoir, I Cried to Dream Again, written with Cori Thomas, ECPAT-USA is hosting a panel discussion about these issues and the movement that Sara’s story has inspired with Sara, Cori, and James Dold of Human Rights for Kids this evening, May 12 at 6 p.m. EDT. The event will be moderated by Nina DeJonghe. Register here ([link removed]) .
