Hi Friend,
When containing an outbreak of a deadly illness, speed is absolutely key. I’ve been on over 20 assignments with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and I’ve seen how a highly contagious disease can spread quickly through a community—some can kill within hours or days if left untreated.
Though COVID-19 continues to dominate the news, it is just one of the many outbreaks that MSF has been working to contain around the world:
In Malawi, we are responding to an outbreak of cholera following Tropical Storm Ana in Ndamera (Nsanje district). MSF teams are distributing cholera prevention kits, conducting health education sessions, and disinfecting local water sources to stymie any further transmission of cholera.
In Niger, following new outbreaks of measles and meningitis in 2021, MSF has launched mass vaccination campaigns in the regions of Zinder, Dosso, Tahoua, Tillabéry, Agadez, and Niamey. A total of 161,000 children aged 6 months to 14 years will be vaccinated against measles and 189,641 against meningitis.
In Tajikistan, in an effort to treat and cure more children with tuberculosis (TB), MSF and the Tajik Ministry of Health and Social Protection are running an innovative project that helps family members diagnose and treat TB at home with remote support from local MSF teams.
We have the staff, the expertise, and the tools to deliver emergency medical care that saves lives in the face of a deadly outbreak. What we need now is your support, Friend, to ensure we're ready to respond at a moment's notice.
