Last week was a grim reminder of just how important our state elections are. If the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, as it has indicated that it will, protecting reproductive rights and our right to abortion will be left in the hands of our state legislatures.

We have a Democratic majority in the Virginia Senate that will fight hard to protect these rights. However, Virginia’s new Republican governor is anti-choice. And he’s made it abundantly clear he’ll do what it takes to force his personal beliefs on Virginians, the majority of whom support safe and legal access to abortion. 

Watch this video from last fall, when he was caught promising to “defund planned parenthood” and “take it to the abortionists.”

Last week, when asked if he intended to implement restrictions in Virginia, he responded by evading the question.

I don’t subscribe to the politics of fear mongering. But it’s not fear mongering to point out that all that stands against the GOP’s anti-choice, right-wing agenda is literally one seat. And it’s this seat that Democrats successfully flipped in 2019. We are holding back the extremist agenda that is revealing itself in other states.

It’s more important than ever for Virginia to remain a safe haven for reproductive rights. Whether that be for Virginians or those in other states who are struggling under the GOP stranglehold.
