| Friend, I’m excited to let you know that the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (MORE Act) was just introduced by Representative Jerry Nadler and Senator Kamala Harris. This is the most sweeping marijuana reform bill ever in Congress. It would de-schedule marijuana at the federal level to let states set their own policies without interference and begin to repair the extensive damage done by prohibition. Tell your Members of Congress to support the MORE Act to end the federal war on marijuana and right the wrongs of prohibition. We and our allies have been working with Rep. Nadler and Sen. Harris on the MORE Act for months. It’s groundbreaking legislation – going further than any other federal marijuana bill by helping to repair the destruction from prohibition and ensure reparative justice and equity in legalization. Marijuana prohibition has been ruining lives for decades, disproportionately affecting people of color and low-income communities. A marijuana arrest or conviction can have life-long consequences, making it difficult for millions of people to get a job, housing, education and even keep their kids. Even though 11 states have legalized marijuana and 33 have legalized medical marijuana, people still face severe consequences because marijuana carries the most restrictive federal classification possible – Schedule 1. The MORE Act would de-schedule marijuana and end federal prohibition in a fair and just way by prioritizing and reinvesting in those who have been most affected by our failed marijuana laws. Contact Congress today and urge them to support the MORE Act. In addition to removing marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act, the bill aims to correct the historical injustices caused by prohibition. It would allow people with marijuana convictions to petition for resentencing and expungement and protect immigrants at risk of deportation or citizenship denial based on a simple marijuana infraction. It would tax marijuana products to help communities negatively impacted by the drug war with employment, reentry, and other resources, reduce barriers for disadvantaged people to enter the cannabis industry, and create equitable licensing programs that benefit communities most impacted by prohibition. A vast majority of Americans like you know the drug war has failed and support marijuana legalization. And thanks to you, momentum for federal reform has never been stronger. It’s time to end the war on marijuana and repair the harms of prohibition. Tell your Members of Congress to support the MORE Act to advance marijuana legalization – and justice – for all.
