May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, an opportunity to celebrate the cultures and contributions of the AAPI community here in San Diego and across the country.

San Diego is so lucky to have such a vibrant and diverse AAPI community that has done so much to make the San Diego we love. Unfortunately, in the past two years, we have seen a disturbing rise in anti-Asian violence across the country. It is more important than ever to denounce this hate and work to dismantle racism in all forms. But we don’t only want to talk about the negative and the hatred when it comes to the Asian-American experience. We also need to celebrate the culture and vibrancy and resilience of this community.

So this month, let’s all recommit ourselves to creating a fairer, more just inclusive society for us all as we honor the contributions and amplify the stories of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. I look forward to working alongside you as we do.
