Florida is facing a property insurance crisis that’s affecting homeowners across the state. Some homeowners are facing rate increases of up to 100 percent, as more and more insurers are dropping out of the market each day.

Now, homeowners are being forced to turn to state-backed Citizens Property Insurance, which is growing at an unsustainable rate of almost 6,000 new polices per week. Later this month, lawmakers will return to Tallahassee for a special session centered on this crisis, but it may be too little, too late.

Floridians are struggling, and it’s the responsibility of lawmakers to address problems like this one before they get out of hand. When I’m your Senator, I’ll always speak up when the people of our community are asking for help.

The housing affordability crisis in our state isn’t just caused by property insurance rates. Rent costs and home prices are skyrocketing across the state, and here in Miami-Dade, we are seeing the worst of it.

And lack of action from legislators following the Surfside condo collapse has led to rapidly rising condo insurance rates in our community too. But that’s not on the agenda for the special session later this month.

I’m committed to fighting to lower the cost of living for all the residents of District 38 and everyone across our state.
