keeping you up to date on all things Northeast Wisconsin The April NEWsflash Friend, Welcome back to the April edition of The NEWsflash, a collection of great stories from Northeast Wisconsin over the past month. Northeast Wisconsinites compassion and dedication to our community was on full display this past month, and I was honored to have opportunities to see how people here were working to make our small slice of the country -- and the world -- a better place. I've included some photos and highlights from a few of the events my team and I were able to attend. You can also find information on how my office can help you with any federal problem you may have. As always, please don't hesitate to contact my office if we can ever be of assistance. Semper Fi, Cultivating Independence: Early this month, my team and I toured Curative Connections and Prosolutions Inc.They provide everything from adult day time services to transportation to employment opportunities for those in need. It's great to have an organization like this helping support families, seniors, and people with disabilities in our community. Supporting Our Ports: I also virtually joined the 2022 Annual Port Symposium hosted by the Port of Green Bay to discuss my efforts to boost funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and my work to improve icebreaking on the Great Lakes. From shipbuilding to transportation, the Great Lakes are the lifeblood of our communities, and the Port of Green Bay is an integral part of that. Because of this, over 100 people attended to receive an update on the Port Development Site at the mouth of the Fox River. When completed, the site will be a state-of-the-art facility, creating business opportunities in the area. Intro to Congress: This month, I also had the opportunity to visit Valley View Elementary School, where I got to speak with students about my job and how the federal government works. It is always an honor to meet young Northeast Wisconsinites and answer their questions about Congress. Fueling Kaukauna: My team had the opportunity to attend the grand re-opening of Kaukauna Coffee and Tea, under new owner Mamie Toppe. It's great to see this business back, and with a full menu of good food and coffee. Thanking Our Heroes: This month, the Old Glory Honor Flight brought veterans to Washington DC, where I got to meet them as they toured the monuments and memorials constructed to commemorate their service. My team was then thrilled to help welcome them back home at Appleton Airport that evening. Honor Flights are always an incredible experience, and it was great to see these brave men and women receive a big welcome home filled with messages of love and appreciation from members of our community. Trucking Along: I also had the opportunity to visit Schneider Trucking this month and hold a roundtable with some truck drivers and industry leaders from WEL Companies and Veriha Trucking. During the visit, we discussed the impact that the trucker shortage has had on their industry and my bipartisan bill that would help address this problem (you can read more about it here). Feeding Families: My team and I also visited the StoneRidge Piggly Wiggly to meet with their Operations Director Brian Hilley, and President and CEO of the Wisconsin Grocers Association, Brandon Scholz. After our discussion I volunteered with the store's staff and learned more about the industry and challenges they're facing. Honoring Robert Nelson's Service: On April 19, I presented Sturgeon Bay native Robert Nelson with the Korea Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. Nelson served in the U.S. Air Force’s 314th Air Division and deployed to Korea in 1957, where he helped stand up a new mission, United States Forces Korea. After years of working together, I was proud to finally award this long-overdue honor to Robert. Lighting a Fire for Ukraine: A special visit this month for me was a trip to Door County Candle Company, which has been creating and selling candles to support Ukrainians affected by the Russian invasion. The company's owner, Christiana Gorchynsky, has inspired volunteers to put more than eight thousand hours of work into these candles, and in the process has raised $425,000. Other events from Northeast Wisconsin last month: 'Alice in Dairyland' raises awareness for sustainability on farms Loyalty Day Parade: Village of Denmark shows off patriotic pride 100+ Women Who Care of Door County award over $25,000 in grants Truck honoring Special Olympics awarded to accomplished driver REMINDER: If you're experiencing issues with a federal agency, my office is here to help.
