Senate Republicans just failed the American people, again.

They just blocked passage of the Women's Health Protection Act – legislation I co-authored and am lead sponsor to, designed to enshrine the fundamental human right of healthcare into federal law for all American women.

Right-wing extremists – after a half-century long war on women's fundamental healthcare rights – are seeing their work come to fruition: Their conservative justices on the U.S. Supreme Court are signaling boldly their intent to overturn Roe v. Wade, triggering existing and future abortion bans that will impact more than 36 million women. Meanwhile, not only have two GOP senators aleady proposed a national abortion ban, there have been suggestions of broader discussion if they retake control of the Senate.

I know you're feeling angry, perhaps fearful. But we must harness all our emotions into protecting every pro-choice Democratic seat – so that supporters of reproductive freedom retain control of Congress and a nationwide abortion ban can never see the light of day. A GOP-instituted national abortion ban would unleash an unprecedented violation of human and civil rights unlike anything seen in developed democracies. While abortion access across the world is increasing, this egregious ruling from the Supreme Court and proposed legislation from Republicans will pave the way for women's healthcare freedoms to disappear, putting countless lives a risk. Abortions will still happen, but women – particularly poor women – will be driven to get them in dangerous and perilous conditions.

This attack on human rights, privacy, and individual liberty is the direct consequence of anti-democratic actions by the Republican Party: Despite representing a minority of Americans in the Senate, they conspired and obstructed their way to confirming three ultraconservative Supreme Court justices – justices appointed by Donald Trump, a morally bankrupt president who lost the popular vote in both of his campaigns.

This attack is the antithesis to any sort of functioning democracy. The soul of the Republican Party has been lost to extremism. For the sake of our civil and human rights, we must fight back and protect Democratic control of Congress.

Remember, Mitch McConnell only needs to flip a single seat to steal back control and pass the dangerous legislation Republican senators are plotting. Protecting our control of the Senate hinges on winning here in Connecticut against my Trump-aligned opponent.
