The local elections confirmed the widening gap between the major political parties and most of the people – and the urgent need for a new movement.



That’s why it’s so important that Reform UK is now campaigning for the forthcoming parliamentary by-election in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. And why we need all the support you can give us.

The Conservatives lost hundreds of council seats last week. Yet nobody else really won. Outside London, Labour made no major progress in trying to rebuild its former ‘Red Wall’ strongholds in the North and Midlands that were lost to the Tories in 2019.



Meanwhile the Tory ‘Blue Wall’ in the South also showed signs of crumbling, as the vacuous Liberal Democrats and even the Greens made gains.



These local polls have rightly been dubbed the ‘none-of-the-above’ elections. Overall, two out of three voters stayed away, unable to see the point in voting for any of them. In parts of the North, turnout was as low as 15%.



It’s not hard to see why people feel so disenchanted with and distanced from mainstream politics.



To put forward the bold policy ideas that others won’t, Reform UK is standing in the Wakefield by-election, caused by the resignation of Tory MP Imran Ahmad Khan after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy.



We are already campaigning in support of our outstanding candidate Chris Walsh, a ‘very proud Yorkshireman’, local gym owner and married father of two. Chris is standing for Reform UK because ‘I care about the area, I care about the people here, and I want my kids to grow up in a world where they have opportunities’.



We are the only party campaigning for big tax cuts now, to encourage the economic growth that can provide decent jobs with wages that keep pace with inflation.



And we are the only party campaigning for the UK to rely on our own energy – the key to real growth and ‘levelling up’. There is a fortune in shale gas beneath our feet, if only the Tory government had the nerve to go for it.



That must mean facing down the Green extremists and abandoning the crazy Net Zero targets, which will leave us paying even more money for even less energy.



Instead, the leaders of Wakefield’s Labour council have previously boasted to the Yorkshire Post about their ‘quite positive relationship’ working with Extinction Rebellion – the same eco-zealots who disrupt the lives of working people by blocking our roads and energy supplies. The deputy leader of that XR-friendly council is now a front-runner to be Labour’s by-election candidate.



In 2016, two-thirds of voters in Wakefield voted to Leave the EU and in 2019 they elected their first Tory since MP since 1932, hoping for something better. Voters have been badly let down by both the Tories and Labour. But we cannot let them get away with it. Now it’s time to vote Reform UK to change politics for good.
