Hi John,
Thanksgiving might be our favorite holiday. Food, family, and football -- what could be better? But it can also be a stressful time. A lot of us have a family member who won’t stop talking about Trump. Or maybe you’ll be the only one at your Thanksgiving table not wearing a MAGA hat. All you want to do is enjoy your pumpkin pie, and they keep trying to make you lose your appetite.
So in that spirit, we wanted to share our Top Ten Tips for Dealing with your Conservative Uncle (or Aunt / Friend / Nephew / Grandparent / Cousin twice removed) at Thanksgiving.
- "Did anyone see last night's Maddow..." is probably not the best icebreaker.
- When in doubt, eat more stuffing. Stuffing cures everything.
- Don't rename your WiFi "TrumpIsATurkey" while your family is visiting.
- Talk about things that are completely uncontroversial. Like that Mr. Rogers movie.
- Only say "Would you please pass the Green New Deal" when referring to the salad.
- If they try to goad you into an argument about a conspiracy theory, stuff two sweet potatoes in your ears and then yell back "What!? What did you say about Crowdstrike? I can't hear you with these sweet potatoes in my ears!" Works every time.
- Just for today, wear a stylish cardigan over your "Often Disappointed, Always Disappointing" T-shirt.
- When they wonder why you won’t pass dishes to them, try to avoid saying “I’ll pass you a [CENSORED] roll when Mitch McConnell passes any of the dozens of meaningful bills already passed by the Democratically-controlled House!”
- Remember that health care is a human right, even for people who think it isn't. Also, remember it's not okay to punch your uncle, even if he has health insurance.
- Be true to yourself. Stand up for what is right. Live your values. Sometimes talking about differences is hard, especially inside families, but don't compromise on what you believe in. Remember to find the common values you share with your loved ones. When you do have to have tough conversations, beginning from that common ground is a great start. At the end of the day, you are sharing your table with them. Be thankful for your meal and your time together.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours,
