We have a chance to help stop the flood of anti-choice policies that are coming our way. But we’ll only be able to do so if we have pro-choice legislators in office who are willing to do what’s right.

Dear John,

I’m Mallory McMorrow, current Michigan State Senator and a proud Sister District alumna. You might remember me from our work together in 2018, or seen me at the Sister District Summit earlier this year.

Or, you might recognize me from from this speech I gave on the Senate floor a few weeks ago, about the power of allyship and service, and about how now is the time for people of good conscience to stand up for what’s right:

Since I gave that speech, a lot has happened in the news. In an unprecedented leak, the Supreme Court showed it is likely to overturn Roe v. Wade this summer. If that happens, the battle over the future of reproductive freedom will go to the states – especially the 23 states where abortion will be effectively banned.

That list includes 4 of Sister District’s 2022 target states: Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, and most importantly for me, my own state of Michigan. In Michigan, a nearly 100-year old law banning abortion access will go back into effect immediately if Roe is overturned.

But state Democrats are already working hard to plan for this likely future. In Michigan, we’re filing multiple lawsuits, launching petitions, and introducing bills  (including one sponsored by me, and other Sister District alumnae like Senator Winnie Brinks and Representative Laurie Pohutsky) to codify reproductive rights and abortion access into law.

In 2022, it is absolutely critical that we elect more pro-choice progressives to state legislatures where reproductive freedoms are at high risk. That’s why I’m asking you to join me in supporting Sister District’s work right now, and help stop this attack on our bodies state by state.

As I said on the floor that day, I believe that each and every one of us bears responsibility for writing the next chapter of history. We decide what happens next, and how we respond to history and the world around us.

We have a chance to help stop the flood of anti-choice policies that are coming our way. But we’ll only be able to do so if we have pro-choice legislators in office who are willing to do what’s right. Thank you for standing with me in supporting Sister District’s work.

In solidarity,
Mallory McMorrow
Michigan State Senator, District 13
