Last month, the Pennsylvania House passed an incredibly dangerous bill banning transgender women from competing on women’s sports teams, and it’s making its way through our state senate right now.

Make no mistake: This bill is an ignorant attempt to fix a problem that doesn’t exist — and it’s just one of many attacks the GOP has launched against our students and LGBTQIA+ Pennsylvanians.

Governor Wolf has already promised to veto this legislation, and my colleagues in the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus and I are actively fighting to dismantle these hateful, discriminatory attacks on our young people. But frankly, friend, I’m disappointed that we’re even voting on this bill.

Legislation like this marginalizes our bright and brave LGBTQIA+ students across the state. It exacerbates the already high rates of violence, depression, substance abuse, and death by suicide of our trans youth, and explicitly rejects the professional expertise of school counselors, social workers, psychologists, and administrator organizations who have urged our legislators to prioritize our students’ mental health.

Friend, we’re fighting with everything we have against this draconian bill — and countless others like it. But if we don’t win a Democratic majority this November, we will lose this critical line of defense. Will you chip in so we combat these attacks and protect our trans neighbors today?
