Over the past few weeks, we have celebrated Arbor Day and Earth Day activities, along with our Farmer’s Market OPENING DAY. Later this month (5/27-28), we will be having our flower sale at the Northville Downs location – find a wide array of locally-grown flowers to brighten your home and workplace. Spring has finally sprung, and we’ve even had a taste of summer already.

Before looking at our Garden Clubs and like activities in Northville, let’s see what’s happening today:

Events
* Month of May – Chamber of Commerce Military Veteran banners: Walk around town and view our Heroes.
* May 14^th – Northville “Car Show” 8:00 – 10:00 AM: Behind Alexanders, 124 W. Main St.
* May 27^th & 28^th – Northville Chamber of Commerce Spring Flower Sale. [link removed]
* May 30th, 11:00 AM – REMEMBER OUR VETERANS on Memorial Day. Give respect and attend Northville’s Ceremony at Rural Hill (7 Mile & Rogers St.) for our fallen heroes. Event includes Bands/Choirs/Remarks.

* July 13^th – Northville Country Garden Club Annual Garden Walk

Downtown Social District Update
* At our public meeting on Monday, the City Council and DDA gained valuable input on the Social District and the street closures. We discussed potential street openings, reviewed the data from the over 4,000 surveys and heard a great deal of public comment.

State of Community Presentation
* Tonight - Wed, May 11^th at 7:00 PM, Northville District Library – State of the Community Address and Q & A with the Mayor. Register Here ([link removed]) or just drop in.
* Thursday, June 2^nd, Northville & Northville Townships will TEAM up to review our State of the Community. It will also be available via Zoom… more details to follow.

Now let's transition to Garden Clubs and the Beautification Commission in Northville...
* Northville Garden Club
+ The local Garden Club Branch of the Michigan Division of the National Farm and Garden Association first met on May 25, 1936.
+ The branch was sponsored by Mrs. Henry (Clara Bryant) Ford, who also served as national president from 1927 - 1934. Clara & Henry Ford spent their honeymoon in Northville in the 1880’s and entertained family and friends here.
+ Historically, the branch provides local academic scholarships funded by flower shows (e.g., the WWII "Victory Garden Harvest & Flower Show" and the “Flowers, Fashion & Food Show” of the ‘60s).
+ In 1953, the Branch instituted a Christmas sale and then in 1975, launched the Holiday Greens Mart, as we know it today.
+ In 1998, the branch name was changed to Northville Garden Club, and they celebrated their 80^th anniversary in 2016.

* Country Garden Club of Northville
+ The Country Garden branch of the Woman’s National Farm & Garden Association was established in 1977.
+ The group is dedicated to community improvement through service, conservation and education.
+ This July they will host their 28^th annual Garden Walk. Proceeds from the event provide college scholarships to local high school students and support other environmental causes.
+ Members of the Club maintain beautiful gardens in many public spaces of Northville, such as the Post Office and the Friendship Garden at Township Hall.

* Beautification Commission
+ The Northville Beautification Commission was established in 1967 by the suggestion of Councilwoman Beatrice Carlson and has served the City faithfully since that time.
+ The Commission encourages the planting and preservation of trees, flowers and shrubbery to improve the appearance of Northville. They also participate in educational programs, encourage active support of the community and review construction projects and proposals.

You can see with our topography of hills, water, and greenspaces, we have a deep appreciation for our natural surroundings. The flowers, vegetation, and sustainability of this community over the years has been a high priority. Our Garden Club groups and the Beautification Commission have long played a big part in supporting Northville’s natural splendor.

Thank you for all you do to keep Northville GREEN (Go Spartys) and our waters BLUE (Go Blue). Let’s keep our community engaged in gardening activities for today and for the future, as we ready for our Bicentennial (2027) in the years to come.
