Hi Jack,
Local news coverage drops immediately when corporate owners take over local newspapers according to a study from New Media & Society. Vital reporting is diminished and coverage becomes more national. This drives polarization and makes it harder for people to understand the government actions that affect them every day.
State policies shape people’s daily lives, and state-level political battles shape the national landscape. But too many state government stories go under-reported or unreported and increased corporate ownership of newspapers worsens the crisis. Communities need strong local news.

A new Pew Research report shows there are fewer full-time reporters in statehouses around the country than before 2016. This has real consequences for real people: fewer eyes on state government means our leaders are not being held accountable for their actions. Nonprofit news organizations like States Newsroom are filling the gap, but we need your support.
We created News From The States to bring expert, on-the-ground States Newsroom capital reporting from across the country together in one place for the first time. Our daily newsletter Evening Wrap analyzes the day’s state government trends.
We believe that no matter who you are or who owns your local paper, you need access to high-quality, non-partisan reporting on the crucial issues of our time. We have a feeling that you might agree.
