The GOP has worked obsessively to undo abortion rights in this country for decades, and now, they seem poised to finally get what they want. Even Susan Collins, who in the past has (falsely) labeled herself pro-choice, said she will not support the Democrats' bill guaranteeing the right to an abortion. It is a bad day for reproductive rights in America, and we must fight back with everything we have because lives depend on it.

However, if you can believe it, it gets worse: that's not the only civil right Republicans and their hand-picked right-wing SCOTUS majority are trying to destroy. They're coming for gay marriage next. And no, that's not an overstatement.

In last week's leaked SCOTUS opinion on Roe, Justice Alito directly challenged the legitimacy of any civil rights that don't have “deep roots in history,” even going so far as explicitly criticizing the landmark cases for LGBTQ rights, Obergefell v. Hodges and Lawrence v. Texas. This sets a dangerous precedent that tees up an attack on marriage equality, likely soon. We can't let them get away with this, too.

In order to defend these basic human rights, we absolutely must defend our House majority and expand our Senate majority. The GOP has shown us their playbook. There are no secrets anymore. They can and will take away our rights to abortion, marriage, and possibly more, unless we stop them. Democrats like me are fiercely committed to protecting reproductive rights and LGBTQ rights, but we cannot do that if Democrats don't win.
