March for Free Abortion, On Demand, Without Apology
|
Saturday, May 14 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm DTLA City Hall - 200 N Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90012
|
The Supreme Court is poised to fully overturn Roe v. Wade which would end abortion as a constitutionally-protected right. As soon as they overturn Roe v. Wade, “trigger” laws in 21 states will immediately go into affect, criminalizing abortion. All is not lost: Congress could pass a federal law enshrining a woman’s right to an abortion. In fact, Democrats control the House, Senate, and White House, a trifecta that could allow them to keep abortion legal
We know that people in power will concede nothing with a demand.
We don’t just want “legal” abortion– we want free abortion on demand without apology.
We need a mass movement to secure our radical demands.
March alongside DSA-LA and wear your Red Shirts!!
Public Transportation: We highly encourage marchers to take the Metro Red Line and exit the Civic Ctr / Grand Park Station. There is a short walk from the station to DTLA City Hall. Look for DSA-LA Banners (we will contact RSVPs the day before for additional logistics).

Attend our political education event on Building a Mass Movement for Reproductive Justice
|
Friday, May 13 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
|
We need a mass movement to secure our radical demands.
But what does that look like? What strategies can we use to build a mass movement?
What can we learn from socialist feminists like Jenny Brown who have organized 100,000 women in Florida to prevent draconian abortion bans? What can we learn from feminists around the world in Ireland, Argentina, Chile, Poland, and Mexico who are building mass feminist movements to secure, among other things, a right to an abortion?
Socialist feminists in the US and around the world have long waged successful struggles to realize the legal right to abortion. Yet, when socialist feminists talk about ‘choice’, we mean something more than purely legal freedom.
Join this socialist feminist teach-in to learn about models of democratic organization and action to defend our legal right to abortion, and go beyond this to win a world where ‘choice’ means both the right to not have children, as well as the right to have children who have access to healthcare, housing, and quality caregiving.

Presenting the DSA-LA Voter Guide
|
We're excited to release our 2022 DSA-LA Primary Election Voter Guide! Come learn about all of the races on your ballot, see who we've recommended, and gain a better insight into Los Angeles politics!
As socialists in Los Angeles, we believe that it’s important to contextualize the choices on our election ballots. Who are these candidates and how did they build power? What are the dynamics of the races they’re running in? Will their priorities build socialism, or at least help Los Angeles’ working class? We hope this guide will function as an educational tool to understand what it takes to bring working class power to the county, as well as help you fill out your ballot.

Participants will also learn about the history of our organization and our chapter in particular, the current projects we’re working on, and how you can get involved. This is not a lecture, but a meeting for new and veteran organizers to ground ourselves in socialist theory and discuss together how we can put it into action. We’re excited to chat with you!

DSA-LA SFV Marxism Reading Group – One Lecture and Two Essays About Latin America
|
Tuesday, May 10 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
|
Please join us for our discussion of a Lecture and Two Essays about Latin America.
From Marta Harnecker, we have a lecture: Reading Marx’s ‘Capital’ today – Lessons from Latin America and an essay: Latin America & Twenty-First Century Socialism: Inventing to Avoid Mistakes. In these, Harnecker talks about Twenty-First Century Socialism, the contributions of Marx and Engels, and how important democracy is to making it work.
From the EZLN, we have the essay A Zapatista Response to “The EZLN Is NOT Anarchist”. In it, they confirm they are indeed not anarchist, or communist, but rather “We are people trying to take control of our lives and reclaim a dignity that was stolen from us the moment Cortes came to power.” What’s more important, the label or the content it represents?
A collaborative doc with the text we’ll be discussing, and Zoom connection information is provided. Please RSVP for access
The discussion group is open to all, including DSA members outside of the San Fernando Valley and non-DSA members.
