Teachers shouldn’t have to take on second jobs just to pay the bills.
John,
Teachers everywhere are underpaid and burnt out.
The last two years have stressed our education system in unprecedented ways, and teachers have done everything in their power to make sure our kids have everything they need to learn and succeed.
Meanwhile, too many teachers are having to take on second jobs and pinch pennies just to pay the bills.
Teachers routinely go above and beyond their job descriptions to help their students thrive. But they’re paid nearly 20% less on average than other college graduates. It’s no surprise, then, that so many schools are struggling to attract and retain qualified teachers.
Right now, North Carolina’s public elementary schools are facing teacher shortages in all core subjects — and there also aren’t enough substitute teachers to fill the gaps.
Our students deserve the best possible education. They won’t get it without excellent educators who are able to stay in the profession they love without worrying about making ends meet.
