Alexandria just made two new endorsements for the 2022 election cycle.
We’re proud to be supporting two strong progressives who are running for Congress: Summer Lee and Nida Allam!
Nida and Summer are both facing primary elections on May 17 (that’s just one week away) and are up against powerful special interests who are spending millions to defeat them.
Here is a little more info about these excellent candidates:
Nida Allam: Nida is running in North Carolina’s 4th district. This seat opened up for the first time in years when Democrat David Price announced his retirement. If elected, Nida will be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress at just 28 years old (a title previously held by Alexandria at 29) – and the first Pakistani-American member.
In 2020, Nida ran an unprecedented progressive campaign for Durham County Commissioner, where she became the first Muslim woman elected to public office in North Carolina and fought to raise the minimum wage and provide property tax relief for low-income people. Now she is ready to fight for a progressive agenda in Congress.
Nida will fight to enshrine Roe as the law of the land. After news broke of the draft SCOTUS decision on Roe, Nida said: “When they come for our right to choose, they’re coming for our right to our lives. We can’t let them take it."
Summer Lee: Summer is running in Pennsylvania’s 12th district. With longtime Democrat Mike Doyle retiring, Pittsburgh will elect a new representative in Congress for the first time in 25 years.
As a Pennsylvania state legislator and dedicated organizer, activist, and attorney – Summer has fought tirelessly to lift up movements and transform her community. When she first ran for State House in 2018, she took on a 20-year incumbent, doubled voter turnout, and won. Now, she is running for Congress to deliver for the working class.
It matters a great deal what kind of Democrats fill these seats. Nida and Summer will fight for their communities and that’s why we’re proud to be mobilizing Team AOC volunteers to lead phone banks and recruit more volunteers for their campaigns.
