Liz Willen Dear reader,
How many times have you heard a young child respond to the question, “What’s your favorite part of the day?” with this answer: “Recess!” (Mine always did, until they discovered music.)
But this week, The Hechinger Report’s Jackie Mader writes that many students have recess taken ([link removed]) away as a punishment. It’s a tough topic; she’s heard from teachers who say they often have no other recourse when students misbehave. Yet research shows just how important it is for young children to have free play, physical activity and social time. We’d love to hear more from our readers on this topic.
And in some fascinating reading this week, columnist Jill Barshay takes us inside the world of standardized tests, asking a top expert ([link removed]) how to determine if questions on tests are white-centric or even racist. Our look at middle school continues as well, with an op-ed oncareer development ([link removed]) . We also have an opinion piece reminding us what schools can do about climate change ([link removed]) .
Finally, I wondered how students in red states are feeling about the leaked Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe v. Wade. I turned to high schoolers at the alma mater of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, in Louisville, Kentucky. They had a lot ([link removed]) to say.
One last thing: Today is The Hechinger Report’s 12th anniversary! Please let us know how you feel about our work, and remind others to sign up ([link removed]) for our newsletters.
