It's not every Mother's Day weekend that you find yourself rallying in the pouring rain for reproductive rights, but as the mother of two daughters, that's the only place I wanted to be this past Saturday. As Long Islanders, we came together to protest the news that SCOTUS is set to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Being a mother is the single greatest gift of my life. But I struggled as a young single mom and even relied on food stamps and waitressing tips to put food on the table. In time, with the help of my family, I worked my way into a better life for myself and my daughter. But what about the women who do not have supportive families, the women who are on their own with nothing and no one to fall back on?

Forcing women through pregnancy, and potentially into a lifetime of poverty, is an intolerable restriction on our basic right to self-determination. One made even more unacceptable in a country that has yet to guarantee paid leave, universal childcare and healthcare to its citizens. And made even more frightening when we see that the same far-right forces that want to overturn Roe are coming for contraception and even seeking to criminalize miscarriage.

John, we will not go back. There's too much at stake. We'll keep fighting as long as it takes to win this battle for our reproductive rights. I'll be speaking out at more events in the weeks to come and urging Congress to act. I hope you'll join us on the frontline of this fight.
