John, I’m not here at ADL because I’m interested in business as usual.
To be honest, I actually never saw myself becoming a researcher of antisemitism. For years, I’ve studied the contemporary Jewish community for a range of organizations (most recently the Orthodox Union) to align our broad strategy with what our community actually needed on a day-to day-basis. While antisemitism was impossible to ignore, it never registered as a top priority.
Then the last five years happened, and I knew things had to change...

methodologically, we are increasingly aware of just how much is missing, unreported. In other words, we’re just scratching the surface.
This all inspired something big, something brand-new — a

Center for Antisemitism Research. My goal in directing our new Center for Antisemitism Research is not just to deepen our understanding of antisemitism but to help make the Jewish community safer. We will ruthlessly and systematically test what ADL does, to ensure our programs have the impact we need them to have and to strengthen reporting on antisemitism across the board. Thankfully, ADL has many tactics at our disposal to fight antisemitism — from education to law enforcement partnerships to public policy. But, which tools work best? When should we employ them? How do we best wield them?

microgrant program for experiments and evaluations that will both tap into some of the most innovative thinkers across the country and around the world, and our own in-house strategic research, we’re gathering the base of evidence we need to ensure that what we do makes a real difference in the world of fighting antisemitism in all of its constantly changing manifestations.
For me, it’s difficult to overstate the importance of this project.
The ascension of extremism, the rise of the delegitimization of Israel, the continued marginalization of Jews across the globe, and the further erosion of democratic norms call on us to meet this moment with all of the courage, creativity and commitment we can muster.
I joined ADL to enhance and ensure our impact, and I invite you to support us in this endeavor as we Fight Hate for Good.
Sincerely,
Matt Williams
