Too Little Too Late? White House Admonishes Those Intimidating SCOTUS Justices
|
Katie Pavlich: After a weekend of raucous pro-abortion activists descending on churches and the homes of Supreme Court Justices, the White House is finally condemning the behavior ( Townhall). Jen Psaki: @POTUS strongly believes in the Constitutional right to protest. But that should never include violence, threats, or vandalism. Judges perform an incredibly important function in our society, and they must be able to do their jobs without concern for their personal safety ( Twitter). Washington Examiner: Psaki’s remarks came days after abortion-rights activists gathered in front of the homes of Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Chief Justice John Roberts to protest the leaked draft opinion suggesting the court is prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade ( Washington Examiner). Over the weekend pro abortion protesters threw a Molotov cocktail into offices of a pro-life group ( Life News). The Federalist: Despite increasing calls for the president to denounce the violence, Biden has yet to personally call for peace. Democrats tried to impeach former President Donald Trump for “inciting a riot” on Jan. 6, 2021. They accused him of egging on his supporters even though he called for peace in a video that was quickly censored by Big Tech ( Federalist).

Current Statute: Protesting Outside of Supreme Court Justices’ Homes Is Illegal
|
18 U.S. Code 1507 States: Whoever, with the intent of interfering with, obstructing, or impeding the administration of justice, or with the intent of influencing any judge, juror, witness, or court officer, in the discharge of his duty, pickets or parades in or near a building housing a court of the United States, or in or near a building or residence occupied or used by such judge, juror, witness, or court officer, or with such intent uses any sound-truck or similar device or resorts to any other demonstration in or near any such building or residence, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both ( Cornell). Daily Caller: The left-wing group “Ruth Sent Us” published what appears to be the addresses of the six conservative Supreme Court justices, including Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, to protest against the leaked draft of the Court’s majority opinion reportedly slated to overturn Roe v. Wade ( Daily Caller). Carrie Serevino: Doxxing judges is extremely dangerous. Joe Biden should condemn in the strongest terms the efforts of left-wing dark money groups to publish and descend upon the justices’ home addresses ( Twitter). Julio Rosas: Pro-abortion protesters have made it to what they say is Justice Alito’s home in Virginia. Police are here. Looks like no one is home. Protesters are chanting “Keep abortion safe and legal” ( Twitter).

Senate Votes to Expand Security for Supreme Court Families
|
CNN: Members of the US Senate passed a bipartisan bill Monday that would expand security protection to the family members of Supreme Court justices, following protests at some justices’ homes over the weekend. The bill was approved by unanimous consent, meaning no senators objected to its quick passage. The legislation must also be passed by the House before going to President Joe Biden’s desk for his signature. The push in Congress comes one week after Politico’s bombshell leaked draft of an opinion, which indicated the Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade as soon as next month. Sens. John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, and Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, introduced the bipartisan bill called the Supreme Court Police Parity Act ( CNN).

Far-Left Protesters Calling to Abolish Supreme Court
|
Townhall: Pro-abortion protesters with Party for Socialism and Liberation and other far-left groups gathered on Saturday to voice their opposition to the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade, going as far as to call for the Supreme Court to be abolished. Pro-abortion protests have been intensifying across the country to put pressure on the Supreme Court justices to not rule overturn Roe v. Wade, which would result in abortion laws being put in the hands of the states ( Townhall). Julio Rosas: At a pro-abortion protest in Los Angeles, far-left protesters called for the Supreme Court to be abolished, not just because of potentially overturning Roe v. Wade but also for actions such as ending the eviction moratorium ( Twitter).

Poll: 82 Percent of US Voters Are Worried About Gas Prices
|
Rasmussen: A new national telephone and online survey by Rasmussen Reports and the Heartland Institute finds that 82% of Likely U.S. Voters are concerned about rising energy and gasoline prices, including 60% who are Very Concerned. Only 14% aren’t concerned about the rising price of energy. Sixty percent (60%) favor a law that would dramatically increase oil and gas drilling in the United States, including 47% who would Strongly Favor such a law. Thirty percent (30%) would oppose a law to increase drilling ( Rasmussen). Today: Gas prices are nearing a record high, up 14 cents from last week pushing the national average to $4.33 per gallon ( Twitter). Ed Morrissey: The average price for a gallon of gas in the week ending January 18, 2021 — the last measure before Joe Biden’s inauguration as president — was $2.464 per gallon. Since then, the average pump price has risen $1.821 per gallon, a 73% increase in the cost of gasoline to consumers ( HotAir).

Baby Formula Shortage Leads Mothers to Panic
|
Daily Wire: Parents are frustrated and stressed while trying to find infant formula for their children as the shelves remain bare at popular retailers including Walmart, Target, and grocery store chains, according to shoppers. Many of these retailers have instated limits on formula purchases, so even when their brand becomes available, moms can’t stock up. Most brands are also sold out online or are being offered by third party sellers for exorbitant prices. This problem has become especially difficult for parents of children with intolerances who rely on certain brands that their babies are able to digest ( Daily Wire). RNC Research: Moms are facing a “terrifying” shortage of baby formula, which has “become impossible to find” as Biden’s supply chain crisis persists ( Twitter). National Review: Most reporting on the infant-formula shortage points the finger at Abbott Laboratories, which instituted a February recall of powder formulas, including Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare, manufactured in its Sturgis, Mich., facility. The recall — which the company emphasizes was voluntary — came after four consumer complaints of Cronobacter sakazakii (a.k.a. Salmonella Newport) in infants who had consumed powdered formula manufactured in the Sturgis plant ( National Review).

Alabama Law Protecting Teens from Gender Transition, Puberty Blockers, Takes Effect
|
From the story: An Alabama law making it a felony to provide puberty blockers or perform gender transition surgery on minors took effect Monday. Republican Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed the law in early April. The law makes it punishable by up to ten years in prison to provide puberty blockers, hormone treatments, or transition surgery to anyone under 19 years old ( Fox News). NBC: Transgender rights have emerged as a wedge issue in the culture wars ahead of the November midterm congressional elections. Republican lawmakers have introduced hundreds of bills across state legislatures, the majority of them directed at trans youth. Many Republicans and conservative activists promote the laws as safeguards for children and parental rights. Opponents, including Democrats and LGBTQ organizations, say the legislation is harmful, unnecessary and would have dire consequences on an already vulnerable population ( NBC).

China Conducts Military Exercises in Taiwanese Airspace
|
This just after 18 Chinese warplanes started the provocation last Friday. From the story: The Chinese army sent aircraft into Taiwan’s air defense zone over the weekend to ‘test and improve their combat capability’, Beijing said. Taiwan had scrambled aircraft and readied missile defenses when 18 Chinese jets violated its air defense identification zone (ADIZ) on Friday. The People’s Liberation Army maneuvers were repeated on Saturday and Sunday… Japan reported last week that eight Chinese naval vessels including an aircraft carrier passed between its islands in the Okinawa chain near Taiwan ( Daily Mail). New York Post: Tensions between the two countries have escalated in the weeks since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, with Taipei fearing Beijing may try to pull off a similar attack. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) last week introduced a bill that would fast-track arms transfers, increase training and strengthen relations between the US and Taiwanese militaries. Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu told reporters Monday that China poses a threat to the island nation but insisted that “we have the determination to defend our country” ( New York Post).
