Women are bearing the brunt of the worsening drought catastrophe in the
Horn of Africa. They walk miles each day to get water for their families,
crops, and livestock. They care for their children in improvised tents as
they seek relief from hunger.

On Mother’s Day last weekend, I thought about the experience of motherhood
for women uprooted by the war in Ukraine or in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia,
and the 40+ countries that we serve around the world facing extremely
difficult circumstances. These conditions force mothers to summon a deep
strength to protect and provide for their children.

Jamila is a mother and a small business owner in Kenya. Mercy Corps
business training helped her open a small retail shop to provide for her
family.


It is these mothers who are often the agents of change in their
communities. Every day, our teams work with them and other leaders to
address the root causes of crises and create lasting solutions that help
build better futures.
