Braddock Carnegie Library has a lot that you wouldn’t expect — like puppets, a swimming pool and a pottery studio.
But it still lacks basics any library patron would expect. Like elevators ([link removed]) . And consistent heat and air conditioning.
A community centerpiece for kids and adults, the library branch is under renovation but the funds to finish aren’t yet in hand. Its problems aren’t unique in a county with 46 separate library organizations, ranging from flush to struggling.
As you’ll learn from our story with 90.5 WESA ([link removed]) , some of Allegheny County’s library systems are striving to serve and modernize amid uneven funding. What’s driving the disparities? Regional fragmentation and a funding formula driving more tax dollars to some libraries than others.
PublicSource's Rich Lord and 90.5 WESA's Kate Giammarise explored the impact of a key funding formula on libraries with starkly different needs and financial realities.
Read Whispers in the Stacks, check the map for your library’s RAD tax take and listen to WESA’s audio story here. ([link removed])
