Bowman for Congress

Hey John, it's great to meet you.

My name is Louis Romain, Team Bowman's Political Director, and I wanted to take a moment with you to unpack the uncertainty and urgency of where our campaign is right now.

But before I do, I'll have to ask: Can you chip in a donation of $3 or anything you are able to help strengthen our campaign for the fights ahead? Every dollar you donate will deeply impact our campaign.

Contribute $3

By now you've probably heard the most recent developments on our campaign's electoral landscape and the many obstacles that we face to get to Election Day. And if you need a refresher, here's where we're at:

  1. In late April, the New York State Court of Appeals, the highest court in New York, announced that the redistricting maps we've used to drive our petitioning efforts and build our community of supporters were officially considered unconstitutional.
  2. With this ruling upheld, we're now preparing for the potential of a completely new district map for NY-16 and a delayed or even split election date, where the US Congressional primaries might occur in August while the statewide elections (Governor, Lt Governor, etc) might still take place in June.
  3. This past quarter, our conservative opponent outraised our campaign. This potential delay in the election could grant them more time to raise more funds and support to fight our campaign well before we get to the polls.

So where does that leave us? We need to fight back against these new levels of voter disenfranchisement — and that takes resources. These recent changes to our electoral landscape are yet another attack on working people and people of color's voting access by Cuomo-appointed conservative judges who are actively working against our progressive values. Additionally, this change will almost certainly drive down voter turnout and penalize progressives all throughout New York.

Historically, New York has experienced record low voter turnout and is always below the national average. For decades, progressives have been fighting for, and more recently winning electoral reforms to increase turnout, like early voting for example. Let's not be mistaken, a split election date will present new challenges to vote that will push back against our recent advancements.

These advancements played a big role during Jamaal's last election, where we saw almost three times the voter turnout among young people and people of color, only further proving that NY-16 is ready to support our progressive vision when voters have easy access to the polls.

We need all of our grassroots supporters to step up and show out for our movement to ensure that Jamaal can continue to fight for us in Congress. If you are determined to fight, not only for the future of NY-16, but also for communities just like ours — please chip in a donation of $3 or anything you are able today.

Let's do this,

Louis Romain, Political Director
Bowman for Congress
