Dear Friends,
What a year it’s been! While 2018 has been challenging, there have also been countless moments of hope and joy. This year our parent organization American Documentary has been busy bringing the public the best in documentaries:
* Our flagship series POV brought back beloved science communicator Bill Nye ([link removed]) to public media, alongside stories of unsung heroes like the Rainey family in QUEST ([link removed]) or the grandmothers in The Apology ([link removed]) .
* Our growing series America ReFramed, now in its sixth year, continues to garner acclaim, including its first ever Peabody ([link removed]) and duPont ([link removed]) awards and three Emmy nominations ([link removed]) this year alone—the most ever for the series!
* We also launched an innovative new broadcast series called POV Shorts ([link removed]) , dedicated to short- form nonfiction content
* We created new ways to address artist sustainability in the field, from the Knight-AmDoc Patron fund ([link removed]) on Kickstarter to Artist Emergency Fund ([link removed]) ; together helping over 30 emerging and established filmmakers around the country.
* Our engagement team is entering a new chapter under the leadership of Asad Muhammad ([link removed]) as our vice president of impact and engagement, and is on track for another record-breaking year with over 800 free public screenings in communities across the country.
* Our interactive team continues to push the boundaries of nonfiction film, with the upcoming launch of our mobile stories initiative spotlighting young female creators on Instagram. More info coming!
At its core, documentaries are all about great storytelling: fulfilling a fundamentally human desire to gather and share stories that reveal that we're not alone in the world, that our many differences can be bridged by the things that feel universal.
As you gather with friends and family this week, we invite you to use our documentaries as a springboard for conversation and connection. We hope you'll join us as we expand our initiatives into 2019 and beyond to keep powerful storytelling accessible to everyone. This year, our generous donors will double up to $15,000 in year-end donations. Every contribution is meaningful and enables us to support bold documentaries and documentarians for the public good.
Thank you for keeping meaningful storytelling alive!
