John, I'm updating you on how things look since Liz emailed earlier today. So far, thousands of grassroots supporters like you have signed our Mother's Day petition demanding real action against gun violence. It's important to me to lift up Liz's story, especially today, because it's not so different from my own. Both Liz's mother and mine were shot and murdered. I never would have imagined that I could share this horrific experience with anyone. I thought gun violence just "didn't happen" in communities like mine. Until it did. 

When my mother was killed — and my father shot multiple times — I learned the hardest way possible that I wasn't safe from gun violence. No community is. I felt numb — it seemed so easy to give into the idea that I was helpless to stop this from happening again, that progress was impossible. But that was before I came to Brady, and met the other survivors leading this movement – with YOUR support.

Today, I know we can come together and save lives — so I'm focused on that. I'm focused on the legacy I can help give my mother. I'm focused on the power we have to honor all the mothers and other loved ones killed by gun violence — by demanding Congress take action to prevent gun violence by passing common-sense bipartisan reforms. But we're not going to get there without you. Please, before our midnight deadline, will you sign our petition demanding action from Congress to prevent gun violence and save lives?
