MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS May 3 - May 9, 2022 THE WEEK IN BRIEF On Tuesday May 3, the U.S. Navy released information on recent live-fire missile exercises with the guided-missile destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) as the crew prepares for their maiden deployment. During the live-fire exercises, the USS Zumwalt’s crew engaged live targets with a series of Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile Block 1 (ESSM) (RIM 162D) and the Standard Missile 2 (SM-2) as part of the stealth destroyer’s final air defense testing. On Wednesday, May 4, North Korea fired a ballistic missile into the waters off its east coast on Wednesday, Japan and South Korea have reported. The Japanese Deputy Defense Minister Makoto Oniki said the missile is estimated to have flown at a maximum altitude of about 800 kilometers over a distance of about 500 kilometers before falling into the sea outside of Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The launch was North Korea’s first since a military parade late on April 25, at which leader Kim Jong Un vowed to ramp up his development of nuclear arms. Also on May 4, Russia said it has fired two Kalibr cruise missiles at Ukrainian targets from a submarine in the Black Sea and reiterated a warning that is would seek to hit shipments of NATO weapons to Ukraine. The defence ministry published video footage of the cruise missiles being launched from the Black Sea, and said they had hit unspecified ground targets in Ukraine. Earlier on Wednesday, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu reiterated a warning that Russia would seek to destroy convoys of arms shipments to Ukraine from Western countries, which in recent weeks have stepped up these supplies. On Saturday, May 7, North Korea launched a new ballistic missile test from a submarine off the country's east coast according to military officials in South Korea. The South Korean military detected the submarine-launched ballistic missile test off the coast of the North Korean city of Sinpo at 2:07 p.m. local time, according to the Yonhap News Agency. The missile flew about 372 miles (600 kilometers) and reached a maximum altitude of 37 miles (60 km), Yonhap added, suggesting the missile did not reach the boundary of space (about 62 miles or 100 km) through which other ballistic missiles fly. MISSILE DEFENDER OF THE WEEK Sergeant Erin Brooks SGT Brooks is currently assigned as Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of Avenger Team 3, 1st platoon, 1-188th Air Defense Artillery (ADA) Regiment. SGT Brooks has been recognized on several occasions by VIPs as having the best site brief in the Battery. She went as far as dedicating additional time during Culminating Training Exercise (CTE) to assist teams in bettering their site briefs. Her leadership directly resulted in Team 3 being the first to fully recite the new site brief from memory. Team 3 consistently performs at a level above their peers and utilizes their knowledge to mentor other teams. During Avenger certification table V in January 2022, Team 3 finished as the top team in missile reload, Avenger emplacement, and convert to Man-Portable Air Defense Systems. Team 3 consistently finishes near the top in all categories and displays the determination and attention to detail that sets them apart. Team 3 has been recognized for having an outstanding site brief and displaying a professional demeanor on multiple occasions in the National Capital Region. SGT Brooks began military service in 2014 when she joined the North Dakota National Guard as an Avenger Crewmember. She is a graduate of Basic Leader Course. Her previous assignments include Avenger Crewmember, 1-188 ADA; NASAMS Launcher Crewman 1, 1-188 ADA; Avenger Gunner, 2-263 ADA; Squad Leader for COVID-19 mobile test team in Fargo, North Dakota; and Team Leader, 1-188 ADA. SGT Brooks’ deployments include Operation Noble Eagle (2017-2018), Operation Noble Eagle (2018), and Operation Noble Eagle (2021-2022). SGT Brooks’ awards and decorations include Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Mobilization device, Army NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, North Dakota National Guard Basic Training Ribbon. SGT Brooks is married to Stephen Brooks from Westminster, South Carolina. They currently reside in Virginia, Minnesota with their chocolate lab, Timber. She is currently employed as a teacher at Iron Range Tykes Learning Center.
