We know that the Supreme Court is likely poised to overturn Roe v. Wade. That means blue states like New York have a moral responsibility to go above and beyond to protect individuals seeking abortions across the country and become true abortion sanctuary states.

That’s why I spoke to The Cut about New York’s place in the fight to protect abortion. You can read the article by clicking here.

Here’s what you need to know:

Even though the right to an abortion is codified on the state level, New York must do more to become a true sanctuary state. We must pass legislation to protect abortion providers from extradition, to support individuals traveling to New York state seeking abortions, and more.

It is our responsibility to act immediately to make all of these protections a reality, and to improve access to abortion more generally. This includes financially supporting abortion providers and abortion access funds.

There are bills currently sitting in the state legislature — that we could pass tomorrow — to expand access to abortion in New York State. These include a bill I introduced to create an Abortion Access Fund that would financially support people seeking abortion care, and the FIRE HATE Act which would offer legal protections to individuals traveling across state lines to obtain an abortion or gender-affirming care.

We have just a few weeks left of the legislative session in Albany, and I am continuing to push for this legislation to be passed so that New York becomes a sanctuary state once and for all.

Thank you for reading,
