Offshore drilling is a major threat to Massachusetts and all of coastal America: we've seen its consequences in the devastated marine ecosystems and wildlife habitats up and down our shores; in the crude-covered beaches and polluted waterways; in the struggling small businesses and collapsing tourism economies. Yet Donald Trump is clamoring to auction off even more of our shorelines to Big Oil.
Coastal communities already struggling with the consequences of global climate change stand to suffer the most. Trump's plan to escalate drilling operations would risk the calamity of an oil spill and subject communities to more pipelines and refineries, the ordeal of seismic testing, and increased traffic and pollution.
Trump built a significant share of his business on the exploitation of poor communities. His frantic effort to sell our shorelines to Big Oil reeks of the very same dangerous greed.
And thousands, if not millions, of people stand to suffer the consequences. It's up to us to stop them before the drilling starts.
