Lacking any real agenda for the country, far-right state legislators continue scapegoating LGBTQ+ people and other communities in order to push their extremism. It’s part of a troubling and growing trend as the GOP continues to wage the culture wars ahead of the midterm elections.
With a right-leaning Supreme Court, it’s increasingly critical that we codify rights that protect LGBTQ+ people and other communities into federal law. Emboldened by what appears to be a successful challenge to Roe v. Wade, far-right activists are already eyeing a new target: marriage equality. [1]
And they won’t stop with marriage equality – the LBGTQ+ community lacks explicit federal protections when it comes to public accommodations, education, employment, housing, credit, and more. As several states actively attempt to further undermine the rights of LBGTQ+ people, particularly transgender people, the need for clear federal protections couldn’t be greater.
The House last passed the Equality Act more than a year ago, and since then it has been stalled in the Senate. We need advocates like you to continue keeping up the pressure for the Senate to pass this important bill and get it across the finish line.
Opponents of LBGTQ+ equality have been making their voices heard with their members of Congress, and we need to make sure that we outnumber them.
