The leaked draft opinion in the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that would overturn Roe v. Wade is a warning shot for our Democratic majorities in Congress to act.

In 13 states, laws are already on the books that would make most abortions illegal immediately after the Supreme Court overturns Roe — a decision that could be just weeks away.

I’ve heard some of my Republican colleagues in the Senate express shock and dismay at Donald Trump’s appointed Supreme Court justices for seemingly betraying their word during their Senate Judiciary Committee hearings to uphold Roe v. Wade.

But I’m not shocked — we’ve known this was Mitch McConnell’s endgame for decades. Year after year, he’s attempted to block Democratic nominees while confirming a record number of conservative federal judges during Trump’s term. Republicans’ blockade of Merrick Garland and hypocritical advancement of Trump’s Supreme Court nominees were only the most extreme examples.

The Senate must act. We must pass legislation that codifies Roe v. Wade and guarantees federal protections for every American’s fundamental right to an abortion. I’m asking you to add your voice, because we’ll have to be loud to make it happen.
