No universal childcare. No mandated paid parental leave. Shrinking access to abortion. Unacceptably high rates of infant and maternal mortality for Black birthing people and babies. All these things are happening right now in this country.
Yesterday was Mother’s Day in America which meant a lot of lip service to how important mothers are. But, if the above didn’t make it abundantly clear, let us: this country doesn’t care about mothers. The already under-resourced and under-imagined social safety nets that many mothers relied on were decimated by COVID-19 – which continues to rage without a vaccine for children under 5 – and are made worse, daily, by our leaders’ failure to act.
Raising children in safe and healthy communities is a pillar of reproductive justice. It’s beyond time to ensure every single birthing parent is granted this.
