Minn. Public Health Nurse Leader Recognized for Leadership
Congratulations to Renee S. Frauendienst, RN, PHN, BSN, for receiving the 2019 Barbara O’Grady Excellence in Public Health Nursing Leadership Award for her outstanding contributions to public health. The Local Public Health Association of Minnesota isn’t the only one to recognize her: Frauendienst is also a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Public Health Nurse Leader.

NAM Committee Hears About Care Delivery Innovations
To create better health, nurses and other health care providers increasingly try to meet the needs that consumers have that begin with conditions outside of the clinic or hospital. On November 20, a panel of industry leaders offered examples of such innovations to the National Academy of Medicine Future of Nursing 2020-2030 study committee.

AARP, RWJF Leaders Detail Campaign Roots
Mutual goals and complementary resources brought together the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and AARP years ago to create better health for all. Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action leaders Susan C. Reinhard, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Susan B. Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, explain in Nurse Leader how the partnership began in 2007.

Teaching Health Policy Fueled Her Interest
In 2013, Sharron Crowder, PhD, RN, was asked to teach a health policy course for graduate nursing students. Teaching pulled everything together for her, she says—and led to her becoming a 2019 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy fellow. In only two months, she has started to gain the real-world experience she sought.

Better Health Equity: Now There’s a Toolkit
Useful data and useful actions combined can help support greater health equity. That’s why the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action has put on its website a how-to-take-action toolkit and a research paper showing the ways nurses are addressing the social determinants of health. These resources can help nurses and their partners create healthier communities.

Nurse Leads Research on Native American Palliative Care
Mary Isaacson, PhD, MA, an associate professor at the South Dakota State University College of Nursing, has studied palliative care for a decade. Now she will collaborate with caregivers, tribal leaders, spiritual leaders, and healers to design and deliver such programs in culturally appropriate ways to Native Americans.

New - Funds to Nursing Schools Support Would-Be Faculty
To increase the number of qualified nurse faculty, the Health Resources and Services Administration offers its Nurse Faculty Loan Program. What are the best ways to address food and housing insecurity, which are often the root causes of other health problems? Sigma Foundation, Jonas Philanthropies Launch Research Grant
A new fund, the Sigma Foundation for Nursing/Jonas Philanthropies collaborative research grant, is designed to support nursing research that will help improve health care for the most vulnerable citizens of the U.S. Grants are available in three categories: mental health, rural health, and veterans health care. Application deadline: December 1.

Journal Seeks Abstracts for Future of Nursing Issue
Nursing Education Perspectives will devote its fall 2020 issue to The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health report, 10 years after its publication. Action Coalitions and others are encouraged to submit manuscripts about nursing education research studies relevant to the report by January 1.

Fellowship Encourages Better Use of Statistics
Statistical information plays an important role in informing actions to improve health. Guided by that idea, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and AcademyHealth developed a fellowship program, geared toward senior researchers, to encourage the use of NCHS data systems and programs.
