BREAKING: Landmark animal rights legislation signed into law!
Dear John,
On Monday, November 25, 2019, in a monumental win for the animals, a slew of landmark animal protection measures were signed into law:
NYC Mayor Signs Foie Gras Ban Into Law - New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a landmark package of animal protection measures into law, including Intro 1378A, a bill that bans the sale of cruel force-fed foie gras throughout NYC.
Also included in the historic animal package signed into law are Intro 1202A, a bill to stop pigeon poaching; Intro 1425A, the carriage horse heat relief bill; and Intro 1478A, a bill that creates a dedicated Mayoral Office of Animal Welfare in NYC.
LCA is thrilled to be part of the coalition, led by Voters for Animal Rights, that has worked tirelessly to see the foie gras ban passed. New York City is now the largest city in the world to enact such a ban.
. . .
President Signs National Animal Cruelty Act Into Law- President Trump signed the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act into law, making animal cruelty a federal felony.
The PACT Act closes the loophole in the 2010 Animal Crush Video Prohibition Act by outlawing crushing, burning, drowning, suffocating, impaling, and sexual exploitation of animals. The 2010 Act previously only banned the actual creation and distribution of animal crushing videos, not the underlying acts of animal abuse.
Those found guilty of violating the law will be charged with a federal felony offense and will face a penalty of up to seven years in prison.
LCA has long since realized the correlation between animal cruelty and human cruelty. In 2016, LCA launched the FBI Tracks Animal Cruelty campaign to support the FBI's efforts to record all incidents of animal cruelty in the United States with the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS).
