To you – she is “Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan.”
To us – she is ‘Mom.’
What’s the difference you may ask? The answer is – very small.
To be a Mom is very similar to being a Congresswoman. When you rise, you think of them. When you fall asleep at night, you think of them once more. You consistently support their needs. You encourage them (at times more sternly) toward a better path. You work endlessly to give them the best chance possible. You embrace and herald what makes them unique. When they hurt, you hurt. When they shine, you beam.
To us – Congresswoman and Mom are one in the same. When she wakes she messages us about reaching out to the dentist. Between votes, she calls us to console us about a hard day. En route to her district event, she celebrates our show debuts. She falls asleep at night, sending us a note about how much she loves us.
Chrissy Houlahan is a great many things: a scientist, an engineer, a veteran, a teacher, and a COO. However, one of the roles that prepared her the most for Congress, we would argue, is being a Mom.
To be a Mom or mother figure is to give yourself wholeheartedly to the well-being of your family, your friends, or your community. Our Mom gives herself wholeheartedly, to us, to her district, and to her country.
Mom, throughout our lives, you have shown us what it means to lead a life in the service of others. Being your daughters is the greatest gift we did nothing to deserve.
This Mother’s Day, we celebrate our Mom. We celebrate all the moms and mother figures past, present, and soon to be. We are also aware Mother’s Day can be a challenging day for so many. In our family we were raised to believe that family is not defined by blood. To us, you are family.
Happy Mother's Day,
-Carly, Meredith, Molly-
