It's Mother's Day, John – so I want to tell you a little bit more about how my late mother, Sonja Lujan, inspires me endlessly.
My mom was truly one of a kind. Like so many caring and devoted mothers, she became a dedicated advocate for my sister Kimberly and children with disabilities across the country. She worked to right every wrong and fought for the best standard of care, refusing to back down when she knew there was more that could be done.
My mother taught me to fight hard – she's the one who inspired me to ensure that no one is left behind, that no family lacks the support they need and deserve. Her determination in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges has inspired me every single day of my adult life.
It's because of my mom that I had the tenacity and courage to become the first Democratic Hispanic woman Governor, expand our state's free child care program, sign a groundbreaking law to provide free higher education, and strengthen primary education.
Today is the first Mother's Day I've spent without my mom. She passed last month, surrounded by the people that she loved. We treasured every minute with her – and I will miss her very, very much.

I know this day can be bittersweet for so many families. So, whether you're commemorating your own late mother, gathering with your children, or meeting with the whole family, I hope that you are able to find joy in celebrating the women who raised you today.
Happy Mother's Day,
Michelle Lujan Grisham
