Shervin Aazami is running to be the first Iranian-American Democrat to serve in the House of Representatives. This is more than a political campaign – this is a people-powered, progressive movement. With your help, we can take this movement to Washington to
bring real change to CA-32.
Hi John,
The fabled Persian poet Rumi said, “We are born of love; love is our mother.” Well, today is Mother’s Day John, and I feel so blessed to have three incredible mothers in my life – my grandmother, my mother, and my wife. I want to share a little about them, and then highlight the amazing moms of our campaign team!
But first, I want to list the federal policies I’m fighting for to protect and empower our mothers, fathers, and all caregivers. We have 35 million working moms in America, and they continue to face lower pay and promotion levels, greater burnout, and a higher likelihood of pay cuts, layoffs, and restrictions on flexible schedules. For moms of color, these challenges are compounded. Meanwhile, to put it bluntly, dads like myself don’t have to worry about discrimination when we become fathers. It’s totally unacceptable that moms still face systemic bias in the workplace.
That’s why I’ll never stop fighting for:
→ Guaranteed universal childcare and at least 12 weeks of paid family leave
→ The Paycheck Fairness Act to close the racial and gender-based pay gap
→ A single-payer Medicare for All system that fully covers maternal healthcare including postpartum recovery, lactation services, and pelvic floor therapy
Celebrating the Moms of Team Shervin!
Starting with the three incredible mothers in my life…
My grandmother – who raised me for most of my early youth – is by far the strongest woman I know. When the Iranian Revolution started in 1979, she had no choice but to send my mom and my uncle (both teenagers at the time) out of the country on a one-way student visa to Italy. With little money and terrible political conditions back in Iran, my grandmother and mother didn’t see each other for the next 11 years. Now as a parent myself, I can’t even begin to comprehend the pain they both must have felt; but these were the sacrifices they made for survival – sacrifices for love.
And my own mom, tough as nails, taught me the power of responsibility. She was a sales rep in the cosmetics department at Macy’s busting her back to make ends meet for us, working countless hours, weekends, and holidays to keep a roof over our heads. She never fails to remind me of the time when she didn’t have money to replace her worn-out work shoes, but she still spent that precious $30 buying me the Pokémon card I really wanted (it was a limited-edition Charizard card, and yes, I still have it). She did so much to protect me from the struggles we were going through, and all I feel is gratitude and love.
And finally, the love of my life and the mother of our 11-month-old son, Barrett. This Mother’s Day is technically her first, and I know for certain that our son Bear is the luckiest kid in the world to have a mom like Jamie. What I appreciate most about Jamie’s parenting style is how much she tries to empower and facilitate Bear’s very active curiosity. Frankly, it’s not easy parenting and simultaneously running a congressional campaign, and I’m beyond indebted to her for every sacrifice she has made to allow me to be a candidate in the first place.
