[link removed] [[link removed]]I am blessed with a family of strong women. My grandmothers came of age during the depression, raised families during World War II, and saved to send their kids to college. Three generations later, my daughter is at the center of America’s missile defense system, doing the math calculations to intercept any intercontinental ballistic missiles targeting our nation.
On this Mother’s Day, however, I am privileged to honor my wife and mother.
Sharon and I met at Georgetown Law School, she helped me get through torts and civil procedure. We joined the Foreign Service and raised our three incredible children overseas. Sharon, of course, was the rock of the family through multiple moves abroad to Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, and Israel.

She shepharded the family to the bomb shelter during multiple wars, nurtured the kids during the teenage years, and single parented while I was deployed to Iraq and Libya. During these years, Sharon also protected the homeland by serving at the nexus of diplomatic security and counter intelligence. The kids are grown up now, but they could not have had a better mother.
Many of you know that Ann, my mother, passed away this January. So this Mother’s Day is exceptionally tough for me. My mom battled multiple myeloma for nine years. That is not how I think of her however.
I know my mother as a vibrant, engaged young woman who pushed me to dream big, work hard, and follow my passion.

She encouraged me to join the Peace Corps, pursue graduate school, and change the world. She did this not only with her words but also her actions. At 53, my mom earned a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Maryland. That same year, the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce honored her as the “Teacher of the Year''. She embodied passion, excellence, and unconditional love.
I miss my mom this Mother’s Day. But I know I have been blessed with both a mother and a wife who have been the foundation of our family.
Happy Mother’s Day!
