Hi there,

My mom, Carolyn Booker, is and will always be one of my biggest inspirations. I would not be the person I am today without her constant love and support.

Let me tell you a quick story about her and my dad, and the kinds of sacrifices they made to give my brother and me every opportunity growing up.

During the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, my mom organized and participated in sit-ins and marches. As a young Black woman, she accepted the risks of her activism and, motivated by justice and love, helped pave the way for her next step — one that made a lifelong impression upon me.

Empowered by the Fair Housing Act , a product of the activism of countless Americans, in 1969 my parents decided to move into the home of their dreams in New Jersey with their two boys. But it wasn’t that simple.

Real estate agents, upset that my parents were looking at homes in all-white neighborhoods, began a practice of unspoken discrimination known as “real estate steering” to keep us out. But it wasn’t hard for my parents to see what was happening, and with the support of the local Fair Housing Council, they eventually exposed the practice when an allied white couple visited the home my parents were told was not for sale and were instead told it was on the market.

My mom and dad went so far as to have the white couple bid on their home, and on the day of closing, my dad and a volunteer lawyer were the people that showed up.

The real estate agent was so enraged that he sicced a dog on my dad — but love won. The Fair Housing Act passed one year prior put the law on my parents’ side, and we moved in. Thanks to my mom and dad, I was able to grow up in that house, get a quality education, earn a college degree, and eventually move on to work in the U.S. Senate.

To this day my mom continues to speak up and speak out about the issues she cares deeply about.

As your senator, it is my greatest honor to fight for legislation that supports mothers and working families. Motherhood is one of the most courageous decisions a person can make — and motherhood should be theirs to decide, not unelected jurists or legislatures full of men seeking to control their bodies.

We need to do more to support mothers, from the point of deciding to start a family to supporting them in health, education, child care, and housing.

One piece of legislation I’m actively fighting for is the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act . A legislative package containing 12 bills, the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act aims at lowering the disproportionately high Black maternal mortality rate by investing in community-based health organizations and expanding and diversifying the perinatal workforce.

It’s one of the most important ways we can change the equation for Black mothers and ensure every American comes into the world with equal opportunities.

With the Supreme Court’s leaked draft opinion on Roe v. Wade putting abortion rights in jeopardy, I’m more determined than ever to codify Roe in Congress. Motherhood should always be a choice and a privilege — never a forced burden.

I hope this story resonates with you today. For those of you who are missing your moms today, my heart is with you. I hope you can find some peace and opportunity for loving reflection. This isn’t an easy day for everyone, particularly after the last few years.

I want to wish a happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. I’m so grateful for my mom and all of the incredible mothers who have supported me along my journey.

With love and gratitude,

Cory
