John,
We learn so much from our moms, including how to use our voices and stand up for what we believe in. Our moms are often our first teachers, and at When We All Vote we are sending a special Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms who talk to their children, nieces, nephews, students, and more about the importance of voting in our elections.
Today, we are spotlighting some of our dedicated volunteers from our partners at Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc, whose members are celebrating their 100th year. It is their mission to enhance the quality of life for women and their families through community service, civil, and social action. See how their stories about how their moms helped them grow up into lifelong voters.

I fondly remember all the times that I walked with my grandmother to the voting booths at the community center. I remember how she got up early every election day and talked about the best candidates for the different offices, and how she smiled and was full of pride when she was able to cast her vote. My mom and grandmother made sure to explain to me that the ballot box was the most powerful tool that people of color have in the fight for equality.

When I was growing up, my mother voted in every election. Whether it was for the school board or the president, my mother was at the polls. Since I turned 18, I have voted in every local and national election, and my three children go to the polls with me. |
My mother was born in 1937 and raised in Birmingham, Alabama when government leaders in the state directed brutal attacks on peaceful protestors fighting for the right to vote. My mom and her siblings often talked out how they experienced near death just for trying to register to vote. So at a very early age, I learned that there was power in my vote. My family believes in praying together as well as voting together. |
This Mother’s Day, we hope you’ll start a conversation with the mother figures in your life about getting registered and ready to vote in the midterm elections. Thanks for being a part of our team. When We All Vote |
