Friend, refugee moms know they can count on us to be there in the most difficult moments of their lives. With the support of dedicated community members like you, IRC teams are on the ground in Ukraine and Poland delivering essential aid — from emergency food for malnourished children to reproductive healthcare for expecting mothers.

Our teams couldn't do this work without IRC supporters like you. Thank you.

Nearly 3 million people have now become refugees in Poland. Men of military age are not allowed to leave Ukraine, so most of the refugees coming into Poland are mothers carrying their children.

Kosenko is one of these mothers. She and her daughter Viola made the impossible decision to leave when the bombing caused their house to shake. They left everything behind, including Viola's dance shoes and schoolbooks, and drove over two days to reach the border.

Thanks to Kosenko's incredible bravery, she and her daughter are safe in Poland.

Today, on Mother's Day, I hope you can take a few minutes to learn more about the brave mothers leading their children to safety:

26-year-old Helen made an equally difficult decision when she fled to Poland with her 5-month-old son. Though it pained her to leave her husband and family members behind, she knew it was the only way to keep her son safe.

"I still hope to return and find my husband there," she says, but, "I have a little son, 5 months old. So, I left... there's no place to hide with such a small child."

The IRC is committed to being there for mothers like Kosenko and Helen, as well as their families.
