On Mother’s Day, we celebrate all of the women whose care and support help to shape us. And one of the very first acts of this nurturing is often connected to food. Yet households headed by single moms have hunger rates three times the national average.
That was on the mind of Bianca when she recently visited our Bronx New York Community Office. As an expectant mom, Bianca was concerned because she was having trouble stretching her limited budget to cover healthy foods like fruits and vegetables that she knew she and her baby needed.
Bianca had heard about the WIC Program (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) but, after unsuccessfully trying to contact the local government office on her own, thought the program had ended. Thankfully, Bianca decided to visit us to double-check. One of our WIC Specialists was able to assure her that the WIC Program is still available to all pregnant and post-partum women and children ages birth-4 that qualify.
