I got my start in organizing as a young graduate student looking to make change in the world. I knew that our system was broken, and we desperately needed policy change. I learned how to enact that change through mobilizing en masse. I signed up as a grassroots organizing intern for a leading non-profit, and learned about strategy charts, campaign planning, using a megaphone, and speaking to the press. That first internship got me hooked on organizing, and I haven't looked back since! As a child I always loved organizing my mom's closet, so I guess those skills translated to organizing people. :)

Fast-forward to the present, I'm the lead organizer on staff at World BEYOND War, training and mobilizing our members in 175 countries to advocate for a just and sustainable peace. I develop fact sheets, toolkits, webinars, podcasts, and trainings, so that our volunteers are equipped with the talking points to debunk the myths of war, and the strategies to organize, petition, rally, lobby, protest, and divest. And when I don't know the answers, I assemble a list of resources and call upon allies to share tactics, tips, and lessons learned in the field.

A big part of organizing is coalition-building, forming relationships with allied organizations to pool resources and collaborate on campaigns. At World BEYOND War, we are a network of both chapters and affiliates, and a founding member of numerous coalitions, including the international Coalition Against U.S. Foreign Military Bases. War is a unique issue because it intersects with so many other topics. This cross-section between militarism and the environment, economics, and social issues provides enormous potential for collaboration. And that's why we take a holistic approach at World BEYOND War, looking at the institution of war and its multi-faceted impacts.

When you sign up as a monthly sustainer, you provide a foundation that we can count on month after month, as we develop educational resources, build coalitions, train volunteers, and put words into action. In organizing, we "play the long game." As organizers, we often talk about the "ladder of escalation," the series of nonviolent tactics that we use over time to increase people pressure on decision-makers, from petitioning and phonebanking, to rallying, marching, and civil disobedience. The point is that we know it takes time to establish relationships, build momentum, and apply strategic people power to enact the systemic change that we want to see.
