Hi there --
This past week, more than 140 dedicated YIMBY advocates gathered virtually for YIMBY Lobby Week 2022!
Combined, we met with 35 different Legislators’ offices, lobbying in support of a number of crucial housing bills.
Whether we’re on the ground in Sacramento or seeing each other through Zoom, our message to state and local leaders will be heard loud and clear: Our state needs more homes.
If you want to support more grassroots efforts like Lobby Week, chip in $4 today and fund our critical work.
If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately.
Here’s a look at some of the bills we lobbied for this year:
-
SB 886 (Wiener) helps universities build student housing faster and at lower cost by streamlining the environmental review process for housing on university-owned land that is not at high risk of wildfire or in a sensitive habitat.
-
AB 2097 (Friedman) reduces housing costs and air pollution by eliminating expensive parking mandates on new homes built near high-quality transit.
-
AB 2873 (Jones-Sawyer) advances diversity, equity, and inclusion by requiring developers that receive state affordable housing dollars to report if the firms they contract with are owned and operated by people of color, women, or LGBTQ+ people.
-
SCA 2 (Allen) places an Article 34 repeal measure on the ballot. Article 34, which passed in 1950, gives wealthy neighborhoods veto power over affordable housing and worsens racial segregation.
-
AB 2011 (Wicks) allows for ministerial, by-right approval for affordable housing on commercially-zoned lands, and also allows such approvals for mixed-income housing along commercial corridors, as long as the projects meet specified affordability, labor, and environmental criteria.
-
AB 2053 (Lee) establishes the California Housing Authority, an independent state body, and authorizes this authority to construct housing and lease it to a mix of household income ranges through an ownership and rental model.
Legislators know that inaction on the housing crisis is unacceptable -- but it’s on us to keep up the pressure. By meeting virtually and advocating for change, California YIMBY is hard at work building a more inclusive, affordable, and equitable California.
Help us organize for more housing by sponsoring our movement today.
