Working people took to the streets in Oakland on Saturday to demand housing justice.

Rents in the Bay Area are exorbitant. Here in San Francisco, the average one bedroom apartment is now $3,600 per month.

While the real estate industry is booming, working people are struggling to survive in our city.

Congress could help fix this, but hasn’t. As your representative, making housing a human right will be among my top priorities!

The cost of housing—and, predictably, homelessness—began increasing in the 1980s, as conservative politicians led by President Raegan cut long-established subsidies for affordable housing.

Today’s housing crisis is a direct result. It’s time to reverse that disastrous trend.

I support the initiatives introduced by Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez & Ilhan Omar, and Senator Bernie Sanders, to restore and improve the quality of our public housing stock and build millions of new public housing units.

You know who doesn’t support those proposals? The incumbent we aim to replace: Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

It’s long past time to invest public dollars in public housing, rather than abandoning property development to the vagaries of the market.
