GARE co-director Julie Nelson was recently quoted in the Washington Post discussing Montgomery County’s passage of a wide-ranging racial equity bill. Julie calls The Racial Equity and Social Justice Act, which will mandate racial equity training for more than 8,000 government employees, a significant piece of legislation that will serve as a model for other municipalities.

Jeff Chang’s Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation was recently listed on Slate’s “The 50 Best Nonfiction Books of the Past 25 Years”. The write-up highlights Jeff's coverage of the time, “Chang situates the revolution in the political and social context of 20th-century New York (and America): deeply racist, economically cruel, and ready to explode.”

“I just finished reading Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami. It is the story of a portrait painter who discovers a painting that opens up a series of questions, and challenges that take the painter on a disturbing, twisting path back to himself. Murakami's writing often explores the thin veil between dreams, reality, and a mysterious plane that exists somewhere in between both.”
