Dear John,
Forty two years ago, Grassroots Leadership was founded with the vision to build leaders in communities across the South across the lines of race, gender, and class to fight for boldly progressive change. Our organization’s history is directly tied to the Southern Freedom Movement.
Today, Grassroots Leadership’s work is based in Texas. It’s here, in one of the most criminalized states in the country, that we fight to end mass incarceration and deportation while building an organization made up of those directly impacted by these oppressive systems.

Building on our work spanning four decades, we're continuing with campaigns to shut down cages, repeal harmful laws, divest from all forms of policing and incarceration, and center community building. Most importantly, we continue to lay a collective groundwork for conditions that honor life, abundance, joy, and transformation in communities where death, scarcity, harm, and pain have been the systemic norm.
And for the first time, we’ve been able to purchase a home in East Austin to be a movement space for future generations to organize, heal, and create the kind of long-lasting community change we need.
On Saturday, May 21st starting at 6 PM, we’ll be celebrating with our current community and longtime Grassroots Leadership supporters, including our founder Si Kahn, for a welcoming ceremony.
