Congratulations to new White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on becoming the first Black woman and out LGBTQ+ person in the role! The daughter of Haitian immigrants, Jean-Pierre will give a voice and hope to New Americans and other communities across the country. Her historic promotion also means that we now have a Black woman in—or about to step in—the prominent positions of vice president, U.S. Supreme Court justice, and White House press secretary, a sign of the progress we’re making toward having a government that truly represents us all.

This week, amid the shocking Roe v. Wade draft opinion leak, we learned that, once again, Roe is at risk and our right to reproductive freedom could be left up to the states. Reproductive rights, as we know, are tied to racial, social, gender, LGBTQ+, and economic justice. If this right is taken away, New Americans and communities of color will disproportionately suffer, and so will our democracy. Understandably, many people are mad and feeling exhausted going into the weekend. But we also must remember that the fight is still on. Now is the time to lean into that anger, get organized, donate to local abortion funds, and elect new leaders who understand that our democracy is on the line and who stand with immigrant communities, communities of color, low-income communities, and all who are most impacted by policy decisions.
